Top Camping and Hiking Gear publishes hands-on reviews of the equipment that makes camping and hiking easier rather than more complicated. The focus is on portable power stations, camp lighting, folding wagons and haulers, screen shelters and camp stoves: the gear that gets set up in the dark, carried further than you expected, and left out in weather. Every write-up comes from repeated use across full seasons, not from an afternoon in a backyard, and every one names the person the product is wrong for as plainly as the person it suits.

Camping and Hiking Safety

Never run a camp stove, fuel lantern or any burning appliance inside a tent, a screen shelter, a vehicle or an enclosed awning. Carbon monoxide has no smell and no taste, it collects fastest in exactly the calm sheltered air people set up to enjoy, and it has killed campers who believed the mesh walls around them counted as ventilation. Cook outside, in the open, with the stove on a stable surface well away from fabric, and let it cool completely before it goes back in a vehicle.

Lithium power stations and rechargeable lanterns should be charged where you can see them, not sealed in a hot vehicle, a sleeping bag or a closed bin. Heat is what turns a swollen or damaged battery into a fire. Stop using any pack that has been dropped hard, crushed, soaked or left visibly bulging, and never rely on a consumer power station to run medical equipment that someone's health depends on unless the device manufacturer has specifically approved it.

Loaded wagons and haulers get away from people on slopes. Keep the load low, keep the heaviest items over the axle, walk downhill behind the handle rather than in front of it, and do not let children ride in a cart that was built for cargo.

Weather is the hazard that gets underestimated most. Check the forecast for the elevation you are actually going to, not the town you left, and remember that a warm afternoon at altitude can turn into a near-freezing night within a couple of hours. Carry more water than the walk seems to need, tell someone your route and your expected return, and turn back early rather than finishing a trail in the dark. Stake and guy out any shelter properly before you leave it, because a screen house or canopy that lifts in a gust becomes a heavy object moving fast.
